TOOTH SELECTION FOR BIMETAL BAND SAW BLADES | |
![]() | |
|
REGULAR TOOTH |
VARIABLE TOOTH |
1. Standard Pitch (Regular Tooth)
The TPI (teeth per inch) is consistent for the full length of the blade. Best suited for cutting solids and where vibration and noise are not considered to be a problem.
2. Variable Pitch (Variable Tooth)
The TPI and gullet depth vary along the length of the blade. These blades are best suited to sawing of structure steel, tubes and steels of varying cross sections, they can, however, also be used on solids. These blades have been used with great success in reducing vibration and resonance.

RECOMMENDED CUTTING SPEEDS AND TOOTH SELECTION FOR BIMETAL BAND SAW BLADES
It is important to note that the matching of the speed with feed if vitally important. As it is virtually impossible to express feed in a unit that is (a) understood by all users and (b) expressed in units that are common to all makes of machine. We are expressing the feed rate as light, medium and heavy, where light would be slow feed and heavy would be fast feed.
It is therefore important for the end user to develop a feel for the right feed. The feed should be set so that the blade is not forced through the material but follows the natural

Chip removal rate. Consequently if the feed rate is too low the teeth will rub and cause premature dulling of the blade. If the rate is set too high it will have a number of other effects.
(a) Blade breakage (b) Cutting skew (c) Teeth stripping (d) Flanging of the back edge (e) Gullet cracking, etc.
A way of determining if the feed rate is correct is looking at the chip formation. See pg. 12.
Steel alloys vary considerably within a given specification, these variations also need to be taken into consideration when adjusting the machine.
